Listen Like an Artist

Curated playlists for creative minds

For me, music isn’t just background noise, it’s part of the process. It’s a rhythm to paint to, and sometimes, it’s the only thing that gets me through a creative block. Music is one of the most powerful tools I have to shift my energy, drop into flow, or just stay present. It's a form of meditation and contemplation that helps me connect more deeply with what I’m painting, making or writing.

I keep multiple playlists on rotation because I get bored listening to the same music and i like things that specifically apply to my mood. Some days are soft and still; others are loud, expressive, and chaotic. Whether I’m painting a canvas, writing a blog post, or cleaning my studio I need that noise.

Below are three of my current favourite curated playlists:

1.Art Studio Mix 1

Alt-pop | Indie | Quirky Upbeat
This is the playlist I go to the most, especially when I want to feel a little groovy while I work. It’s something upbeat enough to keep my energy moving, but still a bit off-centre and alternative, which I love. I find it really good for days when I want to stay light but focused. There’s something about the rhythm and tone that helps me loosen up and enjoy the process, warning, I do have a tendency to daydream to this playlist so you might too.

2. Art Studio Mix 2

Lo-fi | Jazz | Instrumental | Focus-Friendly
My ultimate “deep work” companion. This lo-fi, jazzy and chill playlist is smooth, subtle, and almost lyric-free. It’s perfect for when I’m knee-deep in writing or conceptualising and I need to focus. I find it calms my nervous system without dulling my brain, like a sonic herbal tea.

3. Art Studio Mix 3

Rock | Grunge | Screamo-Lite
This one’s for the days when I need to feel something. It’s the playlist I crank when I need to expel excess energy, move my body, and get out of my head. Also great for erratic cleaning sessions between projects.

Listening to music and creating art go hand in hand; they both tell stories, stir emotion, and make us feel more human. I believe curating a playlist specifically for your creative practice isn’t just fun, it’s important. It can help shape the mood of the work, deepens the connection to what you're making, and sometimes, impressions of the song can seep into your art, adding extra personality. So, whether you're painting, stitching, writing, or just staring at a blank page waiting for inspiration, try hitting play on a playlist that fits your vibe. You might be surprised what flows through.
