ARTIST STATEMENT

When in a dream, the world is not quite the same. Time, scale and narratives are warped, creating spaces that would appear bizarre in waking hours. I often feel the same when walking through the bush, the plants and landscapes are familiar though scale, gravity and time seem to be only suggestions for the wild Australian landscape. Looking up at the branches of a tree can often seem like staring at its roots, its stories and its lifetimes of seeking the sun. Getting caught in the trees is a calming sensation for the most part however there is a moment of slight fear as the world seems to bleed and spiral in around the branches. The swirl of charcoal mimics the movement of the forest, leaving traces behind like a dream.
